Queen Elizabeth II, and Prince Phillip, 1982. |

More than a century ago, the Fathers of
Confederation had a vision of Canada as master of its destiny. They worked toward complete
sovereignty for our nation. Constitution 1982 relives the development of their work to its
completion on Apri117, 1982, with the patriation of the Canadian Constitution.
The proclamation of the Constitution Act, 1982
was a symbol, a promise and a commitment: a symbol of a generous vision of society,
characterized by dialogue and consensus; a promise by Canadians, collectively, to cherish
and protect this land of freedom; and finally, the commitment of an adult nation,
conscious that there are no rights without duties, and no liberty without responsibility.
Constitution 1982 pays homage to all those who,
over the years, have worked with faith and perseverance to help Canada achieve full
political maturity .
