Biography

Senator Angus was born in Toronto in 1937, but grew up and still resides in Montreal.  He retired in 2009 as a senior partner of Stikeman Elliott LLP and was associated with the firm's Montreal office since his graduation from McGill University's Faculty of Law with First Class Honours in 1962.  He previously attended Lower Canada College and Princeton University, graduating from Princeton cum laude in 1959. 

He was appointed Queen's Counsel in December 1984 and is an Honourary Life Member of the Canadian Maritime Law Association of which he served as President from 1989 to 1992.  He was recognized and honoured by Le Barreau du Quebec on May 28th, 2009 when he was designated as Advocatus Emeritus.  He has extensive experience in all facets of maritime, insurance and commercial law.

Senator Angus was appointed to the Senate of Canada by the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney on June 10, 1993 and served on the Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce from 1993 to 2009.  He served as both Chair and Deputy Chair on this Committee.  He is currently the Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources and a Member of the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs as well as a Member of the Conflict of Interest for Senators Committee.

Senator Angus has served on the boards of a number of Canadian public and private corporations, including Air Canada from 1985 to 2004, and has extensive experience with audit, corporate governance and compensation committees of corporate boards.  He has been very active with community and public service organizations throughout his career and is the immediate Past Chairman of the Board of the McGill University Health Centre and of the Montreal General Hospital Corporation and a past member of the Board of the Montreal General Hospital Foundation.  He is a member of the Board of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Homes Foundation.  St. Andrew's Homes is a Montreal residence for senior citizens for which Senator Angus has been an active supporter since 1964.

Senator Angus is a proud member of the Conservative Party of Canada and has taken a great interest in Canadian politics, both provincial and federal since his university days.  He joined the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada in 1957 and has held important offices at all levels of the Party.  Over the years, he was particularly active in  fundraising and was Chair of PC Canada Fund from 1983 to 1993 when he became Chairman Emeritus of the Fund.  Today he is a Director of the Conservative Fund Canada and Chair of its Audit Committee.  Senator Angus is generally recognized as one of Canada's leading experts in the theory and practice of money in politics.

He has an active and ongoing interest in athletics and the outdoors and played varsity hockey and golf while at Princeton University.  He remains a keen and active golfer, skier and fly fisherman. He is a member of the Canadian Seniors Golf Association and has a great interest in links and foursomes golf as evidenced by his membership in several United Kingdom clubs including the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrew's and the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers (Muirfield) in Scotland; the Royal County Down and the Royal Portrush Golf Clubs in Northern Ireland; and the Royal St. George's Golf Club in England.  He is President of the St-John Salmon Club of Gaspé.
