Special Senate Committee on Senate Reform.

Prime Minister Harper appears before the Special
Committee on Senate Reform on December 7th, 2006

On Wednesday, June 21, 2006 the Senate appointed a Special Committee to undertake a comprehensive review of the Senate Reform or any other related matter referred to it by the Senate.  The former speaker in the Senate, Liberal Senator Dan Hays, was named Chair of the Committee and Conservative Senator David Angus was named as its Vice Chair.

The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, appeared before the Special Senate Committee on Senate Reform on September 7th, 2006.  This was an historic occasion since PM Harper was the first sitting Prime Minister to ever appear before a Senate Committee.

The Committee studied the subject matter of Bill S-4, a proposal to limit the terms of senators to eight years, and studied Senator Lowell Murray’s motion on regional representation to increase the number of Senate seats in Canada’s West.  The Committee's final Reports were tabled in the Senate Chamber on October 26, 2006 and are available by clicking here.
