Senator Downe Urges Veterans Affairs Subcommittee to Review Agent Orange Compensation Package

Monday, November 26, 2007

Charlottetown Senator Percy Downe has written to Senator Michael Meighan, Chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs, requesting that the Senate committee review the CFB Gagetown Agent Orange Compensation package announced by the Conservative Government in September 2007.

Based on a commitment made by Stephen Harper in the 2006 election, Canadian Forces Veterans are disappointed that the Agent Orange package only offers compensation for those exposed to spraying in 1966 and 1967. I have been contacted by veterans who were led to believe that those exposed to harmful spraying from 1956 to 1984 would be compensated,” says Senator Downe.

During the 2006 federal election, Stephen Harper promised:

“Our government will stand up for full compensation for persons exposed to defoliant spraying during the period from 1956 to 1984. We’ll disclose all information concerning the spraying to veterans and civilians, and will provide medical testing to anyone who may have been exposed.”

“The Senate Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs should be given the opportunity to fully examine the Agent Orange compensation package as soon as possible,” concluded Downe.
