Seniors; Senator Asks PM to Boost GIS
First he fought to ensure Canadian seniors who were entitled to it actually received it, now Senator Percy Downe is fighting to ensure those who get the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) receive more - a lot more.
Downe, a P.E.I. senator, has sent a letter to Prime Minister Paul Martin calling on him to increase the supplement in the upcoming federal budget.
Downe said "a significant monetary increase" would further aid low-income seniors in Canada and allow them to live more comfortably with better access to the service they require.
"The GIS ensures seniors a minimum standard of living and well-being," he said.
