Dear Prime Minister:

I have written to you over the past number of months concerning the flaws in the delivery of the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS). It is an important issue which affects thousands of seniors across the country. Today, however, my letter focuses on the value of the program and its importance in society.

As I have mentioned in earlier correspondence, the GIS benefit has played a significant role in lowing the poverty rate among seniors. The GIS ensures seniors a minimum standard of living and well-being. The GIS benefit, up to $560.00 a month, can make a tremendous difference in the lives of seniors.

As you consider the upcoming budget, it is my hope that you will instruct the Minister of Finance to significantly increase the monetary amount of the GIS benefit. An increase would further aid low income seniors in Canada and allow them to live more comfortably with better access to the services they require. Canadian seniors deserve additional support from the government and I hope that the upcoming budget responds to their needs.

Sincerely,

Percy Downe
Senator
