The Honourable Stockwell Day, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Public Safety
Department of Public Safety
269 Laurier Avenue West
Ottawa ON K1A 0P8

Dear Minister Day:

I am writing today to share with you my concerns regarding the Conservative Government’s failure to honour their 2006 election promise to put more police officers in our cities and communities.

In the 2006 election, the Conservative Party Platform made reference to Department of Public Safety documents which outlined a shortage of police officers in federal, provincial and municipal policing roles. The promise made by the Conservative Party to address this situation was to:

“Negotiate with the provinces to create a new cost-shared program jointly with the provincial and municipal governments, to put at least 2,500 more police on the beat in our cities and communities.”

To date, this election promise has not been honoured. By not keeping this promise, the Harper Government is betraying the trust of those Canadians who voted for your party because of this commitment.

I urge you in your capacity as the Minister of Public Safety to ensure that this promise made by the Conservative Party is honoured without delay.

Sincerely,

Percy E. Downe
Senator
